Why are we here? Corporations are attacking the plague of pointless meetings, the Wall Street Journal reports, which not only waste time and money but stress employees out. Tips to make meetings more effective: Decide on the purpose of the meeting beforehand; make sure all attendees have a good reason to be there, and that they know what the reason is; have an agenda and share it ahead of time; keep the discussion on point; and set a time limit that you stick to, the Journal says …

No beach ball? Building a $50 million banquet hall at the Miami Beach (Fla.) Convention Center would do little to help hotel bookings in the area because room rates are already steep, according to a study noted in the Miami Herald. The rising tide of condo-hotel units has kept pressure on hotel rates, in turn bruising convention business. A debate has been brewing over whether a more attractive ballroom facility would draw planners, or if cheaper rooms are a better lure.
