ST JULIEN HOTEL & SPA

ADDRESS: 900 Walnut St., Boulder, CO 80302

WEB SITE: www.stjulien.com

CERTIFIABLY GREEN: St Julien Hotel & Spa just won the Eco-Cycle's Zero Waste Community & Business Award 2008.

ECO-FRIENDLY EVENT AREAS: With 10,000 square feet of meeting space — consisting of a divisible ballroom and five breakout rooms — the hotel also features four outdoor terraces and garden event areas. The hotel offers its “Green Event Planning Menu,” an à la carte menu of environmentally friendly event and catering options.

STYLISH SUSTAINABILITY: The property uses low-polluting materials, such as paint, carpeting and wall coverings, in its 201 guest rooms.

TREE-HUGGER: When meeting planners choose the Green Event Planning Menu, organic waste from events is composted, and leftover conference supplies can be donated to local nonprofit organizations. Planners can specify refillable water jugs instead of individual water bottles in meeting rooms, and all guest rooms feature water-saving fixtures and energy-efficient lighting.

PHOENIX CONVENTION CENTER

ADDRESS: 100 N. Third St., Phoenix, AZ 85004

WEB SITE: www.phoenixconventioncenter.com

CERTIFIABLY GREEN: The U.S. Green Building Council awarded the Phoenix Convention Center its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Silver Certification in recognition of its environmentally responsible design and operations.

ECO-FRIENDLY EVENT AREAS: Upon completion in January, the convention center will offer 900,000 square feet of versatile event and meeting space, including a 21,000-square-foot conference center and three ballrooms. Meeting spaces will feature manufacturer KI's “Daylight” chairs, which are made from recycled car batteries and seatbelts.

STYLISH SUSTAINABILITY: The center's design highlights Arizona's unique geography; colors, textures and finishes reflect the Sonoran Desert while a dramatic stone and glass atrium in the West Building represents dramatic canyon angles.

TREE-HUGGER: The property features Energy Star-compliant roofing materials, and its high-efficiency irrigation system reduces potable water consumption by 56 percent. A solar power-generating plant with 732 thin-film panels should reduce the center's carbon dioxide emissions by 95 metric tons annually.

HILTON VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON

ADDRESS: 301 W. Sixth St., Vancouver, WA 98660

WEB SITE: www.hilton.com

CERTIFIABLY GREEN: The Hilton Vancouver, Washington, made history by being the first hotel worldwide to be certified by both the U.S. Green Building Council and Green Seal, an independent nonprofit organization providing science-based environmental certifications.

ECO-FRIENDLY EVENT AREAS: The hotel offers two ballrooms and nine conference rooms for a total of 30,000 square feet of meeting space. The catering team provides customized menus and can create an event based on FLOSS — Fresh, Local, Organic and Sustainable Style — which includes composting food waste post-party.

STYLISH SUSTAINABILITY: Hotel landscaping consists of local, native plants that require little watering.

TREE-HUGGER: Charging stations are available for electric cars while a white, reflective roof helps the hotel dissipate heat and thus reduce its air-conditioning load. The hotel buys materials from vendors within a 500-mile radius to support community businesses and reduce transportation impact.
