Although the outlook for corporate holiday party business is especially grim, even the forecast for private/social holiday is down. A third of respondents to a recent online poll from Special Events Magazine say their private/social holiday party business will be down more than 40 percent this year compared with 2007, and just over a quarter say it will be down 10 percent or less.

Eight percent of respondent say their private/social holiday party business will be the same as last year, while 12 percent say business this year will be better than last.

In contrast, nearly 50 percent of respondents to an online poll from Special Events in November said their corporate holiday party business would be off by more than 40 percent this year compared with 2007. Fourteen percent predicted a shortfall of 40 percent or less, while 9 percent predicted a fall-off of 30 percent or less. Eight percent said their business will be down by 20 percent or less. A total of 4 percent said business this year will be about the same as last, and 12 percent expected a boost in business this year.
