Event professionals from throughout the world are gathering in Tampa, Fla., for The Special Event 2012, which opens officially today at the Tampa Convention Center. The event runs through Jan. 27.

Kicking off the week was the two-day Academic Event Professional Conference, serving college and university event professionals in development, alumni relations, marketing and fundraising.

The slate of education programs launched yesterday, with a seminar slate including "Inside the Event Owners Studio," "Four Parties and a Budget," "Do You Speak Mitzvah?" and "The Anatomy of a Commission Sales Plan."

The new showcase event "Fundraisers and Nonprofit Events" launched as well, offering successful ways to make these events fun and flourishing.

The day closed with the "TSE Starts Here" party at the Ritz Ybor.

Today will bring the Opening General Session, featuring "Live from Tampa." The session will also announce the winners of the 2012 Tabletop Gallery competition.

Other highlights today will be the opening of the trade show floor, more education sessions, and the Opening Night Celebration at A La Carte Event Pavilion.
