LATIN GRAMMYS MOVE TO L.A.

Share

Organizers of the Latin Grammys have announced they will move the Sept. 11 event from Miami to Los Angeles in response to security concerns. C. Michael Greene, president and CEO of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences and the Latin Recording Academy, said he decided to shift the show from the AmericanAirlines Arena in downtown Miami to the Los Angeles Forum because of the risk of violent protests by anti-communist Cuban exiles in Florida. He added that Grammy officials became especially concerned after reviewing footage of agitated protesters harassing a crowd that was attending a performance by visiting Cuban group Los Van Van. Some exile groups and the American Civil Liberties Union accused Latin Grammy organizers of using the security issue as an excuse, saying Greene and others were more concerned with the television image of the event. This will be the second year in a row that the Latin Grammys are held Southern California; last year’s event took place at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles.
