“These are Cape Cod lanterns. The event required a more earthy and rustic look than we could achieve with paper lanterns or the glass ivy bowls. The tin Cape Cod lanterns were perfect. Each was lit with a medium-size pillar candle, but LED votives could be used instead. We ran airline cable across the tent to create more hanging points.”

“Everyone is always focused on the bride, so I love doing a little something special for the groom as a surprise. This groom was a director, so we wrapped his boutonnière in film. We've also incorporated a fly-fishing lure for an avid fisherman, and even used a pendant from the groom's father's childhood days in the Boy Scouts for another.”

“Created for an artist, this intimate event for 50 was a celebration of who she was and what she had accomplished. The event not only featured her art but incorporated it throughout the event in places where one wouldn't expect to find it. For example, we decided to extend the gallery theme to the table-seating escort cards. Each guest received a keepsake that was a miniature, framed print of the artist's. Each print contained information about where guests would be seated for the evening. A small touch, but one that really extended the theme of the event through the remainder of the evening.”

“A simple, inexpensive, yet favorite accent of mine out on Catalina Island is utilizing some of the plants from our Native Plant Nursery in wooden boxes for centerpieces or in place of a floral arrangement on a registration table, bar, etc. We acquired the wooden boxes — from Ikea for $4 apiece — for our ball in 2008, and have reused them for various projects ever since. These plants are used in our land-restoration projects throughout the island. This also provides a product placement opportunity for us. Guests are able to see the often-rare plants up close as they dine, and they provide a great conversation-starter as people inquire about what type of plant it is, where it is found, etc.”

“I believe the success of an event can be measured in one fabulous detail that takes it over the top or in the layering on of multiple elements, well finessed, that results in a phenomenal experience that keeps unfolding throughout the evening as each layer is discovered. One highly detailed event that comes to mind was for a major casino that likes to reward its VIP clients for their loyalty and always does it in style. The vision for this event was to treat their 820 guests to an Arabian Night Fantasy. The table recipes were highly detailed with each linen/overlay combination having a specific color of beaded candelabra, charger plate, napkin and chair. The elements were so detailed that we even had specific color ribbons on the zills [finger cymbals], which were used as napkin treatments. Dressing the chiavari chairs with traditional Middle Eastern hip scarves in the core colors com-pleted the stunning tables.”
