The concept of personalization on the wedding day continues to be a priority among couples this year, and such is the case among destination weddings. Jetting off to say "I do" is no longer restricted to a standard set-in-stone wedding package. Instead, couples are eager to incorporate cultural traditions and other details to set their special day apart from any other.
Many properties are recognizing this need and are finding ways to cater to engaged couples’ wishes. South Asian couples in particular are increasingly opting for destination weddings, especially in Mexico, as they seek that shore-side setting for their nuptials.
Properties in popular destinations such as Riviera Maya, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and Riviera Nayarit have become familiar with the cultural preferences and offer ways to incorporate those traditions into the celebration. For example, a number of properties in the Caribbean and Mexico now offer multi-day packages that encompasses up to six individual events to accommodate lengthy South Asian fêtes.
Whether they’re saying "I do" in the Dominican Republic or they’re tying the knot in Puerto Vallarta, South Asian couples can now seek out venues that will provide a mandap and tailor a custom vegetarian menu to meet the dietary preferences of the wedding party. They can also find florists local to the destinations that are familiar with the rich, beautiful colors and designs that South Asian wedding blooms often boast. Some venues even offer mehndi artists to apply the intricate henna designs that are ever-present at South Asian celebrations.
One of the major differences between a destination affair and an at-home celebration is the ability to instill the local culture into the festivities, and South Asian weddings are no exception. Fusion themes have increasingly become popular, which blend flavors and aspects from the local culture with those that are sacred to the couple’s own culture. For example, some newlyweds may opt to pair a Hawaiian lei with the traditional sari for their island celebration, whereas others may want to combine South Asian-style cuisine with Mexican cocktails (or mocktails!) for the best of both worlds.
The simplicity of planning a wedding away from home has opened up the destination wedding market to couples from all walks of life. With everything in place, South Asian to-be-weds can celebrate their marriage among loved ones while away from home, all without a worry.
