Congestion slows pace of walk-athons The number of outdoor participatory events for charity--such as walk-athons, bike-athons and the like--has doubled over the past 10 years, leading to traffic jams and crabby citizens who can't get across town, according to a recent story in the Wall Street Journal. New York is putting a limit on how many walks or runs can be held in popular venues such as Central Park, while San Francisco is charging charities more for permits, to cover the cost of police overtime and cleanup crews ...

MPI names temp leader as CEO search goes on Dallas-based MPI announced today that it has selected its staff director of governance and chief of staff, Sandra Riggins, to coordinate the activities of MPI through the balance of the leadership transition. “We had hoped to have a CEO candidate named by the time Mark [Andrew] assumed his role as chairman, but finding the right executive for the job had to take precedence over meeting a particular deadline,” said Christine Duffy, MPI chairwoman and president and CEO of Maritz Travel Inc. Mark Andrew, CMP, took a leave of absence from Starwood Hotels & Resorts as general manager of the Westin Bayshore, Vancouver, to serve as an interim leader at MPI headquarters on July 1 ...

JLo and Marc spice up Puerto Rican parade The National Puerto Rican Day Parade, held Sunday in New York, drew some 2 million participants, according to Gaithersburg, Md.-based CPR MultiMedia Solutions, which supplied two modular LED screens on the float designed to promote the new movie from celeb couple Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony. The event now tops the attendee tally of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade ...

Wedding setting Brides are turning to lounge and other nontraditional seating options, including mod, ethnic and "shabby chic," to reflect their own style, say top prop houses. For New York-based Props for Today, a big seller is the "white lounge" look, including white sectional seating, glass-top tables and frosted glass bars. North Hollywood, Calif.-based 20th Century Props cites demand for theme props including art deco, '60s mod and "vintage Hollywood bungalow," which includes rattan bars, geometric carved-wood dividers and a "Hollywood" sign.
